“St. Louis Blues” is one of the first blues songs to succeed as a pop song, being performed by numerous musicians of all styles including Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Guy Lombardo, the Boston Pops Orchestra, and featured in a number of films. Handy is said to have been inspired in 1914 by a chance meeting with a woman on the streets of St. Louis who was distraught over her husband’s absence, and therefore lamented, “Ma man’s got a heart like a rock cast in de sea,” a key line of the song.
