This famous prelude from J.S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier can be found in many anthologies of music for piano. Only a sustaining instrument, however, can provide its tiny five-note motive with the pulse it requires to propel the repeated eighth notes with their ever-changing harmonies steadily forward. This “pulse” lies in the three repeated eighth notes: separate each ever so slightly while making a subtle crescendo to the third climactic note. This will reveal Bach’s genius through simplicity: a musical fabric woven from three little notes.
