Wu Wei for flute sextet

$5.00

In Taoism, the concept of wu wei is frequently translated as “effortless action.” Through my own study of ancient Chinese philosophy, I’ve come to define it as “action that is not obsessed with outcome.” This reflects my journey as a composer thus far: to compose for its own sake without thinking about where it ends up.

Far-Eastern hints are heard, which features the concept of wu wei as I hear it in my own mind. The refrain is led by the bass flute as introduced in measure #21. Occasional flecks of dissonance remind the listener that the universe is simultaneously at peace and in chaos.

I dedicate it to Dr. Kate Bergman and her students, who have wu-wei-ed their way into my life.
