Why? for flute octet and string bass optional

Of all question words, “why?” is the most difficult one to answer. This melody seems to ask “why?” over and over again, at first waltzing over it up and down in playful meditation, then in a slower tempo without finding an answer to the question. It should be played in a meditative way, yet lively and light, hoping to leave the audience asking “why?”
