“Sweet and spicy” would be an appropriate label for the 2nd movement of this Ludwig van Beethoven Quintet if it were an entree. Originally composed for oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, and piano, it adapts well for flute choir. It begins with Mozart-like sweetness and simplicity, while gradually adding complexity and drama. Melody lines start alone, then overlap, and eventually compete like siblings looking for the most attention. A full choir from C flutes thru contrabass flute works best for richness, but a second bass may play that bottom part as well. Lacking either, a cello or string bass could also do the job. A solid rhythm is important as is careful attention to marked dynamics, while players move between melody and harmony. The original meter was in two, so no excess emphasis to beat 3 should be given.
