Prelude to A Life is a musical tale of a young person who wonders during the early adult years what will life bring in the future. The first part has a meditative character, painting a dreamy atmosphere. After all, the future is not only unclear at the time, it is unwritten. The middle part, with its arpeggios, describes the turns and changes experience while living. This takes us to the third section, which is a recapitulation of the first one plus some adornments and musical commentaries by the various flute voices. At the end, we hear a lone flute with a note that continues after the closing block chord, signifying that life continues.
