The legend of the great hunter Nimrod is reported in the Bible, Talmud, Muslim historical documents, and other ancient references. Each of Edward Elgar‘s 14 brief pieces represents a different family member or friend. Variation #9 depicts his publisher/friend, August Jaeger. The piece builds tension endlessly without an articulated cadence until the very last measures and with varying phrase lengths, characteristics which keep the listener just a little off-balance.
