An arrangement of one of the ten short pieces within Dvorak’s Opus 59 four hands piano suite, this Number 5 opens with a forward moving figure which resolves into a beautifully harmonious duet.
A compelling development section then incorporates a constantly and rapidly modulating tonal structure. The work begins in Bb before shifting briefly to a second theme in F# major. Following is a tour de force of rapid modulations from Bb to F#, Eb and B major, then F minor, C major, and other delights until finally coming home to Bb for the ending.
This piece not only has beautiful harmonies and rhythms, but also interesting technical and interpretive challenges for the players.
