Milhaud’s Le Boeuf sur le Toit is based on South American choro dances from street festivals that Milhaud heard when he vacationed in South America in 1918. The original work contains not only the dances, but also quite a bit of other material that was background music for the 1920 pantomime farce “The Nothing Doing Bar” by Jean Cocteau. This simplified version contains only the dances, and not the other material that’s more technically demanding.
