Et Incarnatus Est (And Was Made Man) remains the crowning movement of one of Mozart’s best, even though unfinished, works: the “Great” C minor Mass. His newly wed wife, Constanze, sang the soprano solo at the work’s premiere in 1783. As the accompaniment features woodwinds, the piece works very well as a flute choir arrangement. Flutes 1, 2, 3 and Bass comprise respectively the soprano solo, flute, oboe, and the bassoon. The remaining flutes are largely a realization of the movement’s harmony. Proper balance is the key to a beautiful performance.
