Dies in Foro (Latin for “A Day in the Marketplace”) is a piece I wrote for my Latin teacher that features four different flutes playing in a barcarole style. Inspired by Unit I, Stage 4 of The North American Fourth Edition Cambridge Latin Course, it starts out cheerfully in D major, indicating Caecilius in a Pompeiian marketplace going about his typical day. The middle passage switches to the key of B minor, reflecting Caecilius’ troublesome encounter with Hermogenes. The issue is eventually resolved, and the piece is once again happy. This is a great piece for flutists wanting to experience playing low flutes.
