What better instrumentation than flutes, large and small, to depict the peeping and chirping of baby chicks scurrying about, half-in and half-out of their shells!
Overall, the piece is of intermediate difficulty when considering the grace notes and the high range in the 1st flute. The grace notes may be omitted by some players who find them too difficult, as their absence will not diminish the desired effect.
The best approach is to practice slowly at first, gradually increasing speed until … voila … it reaches the magic tempo at which it nearly plays itself! This is a fun, lighthearted piece and should be played accordingly.
